Scotland Internationals

Officially recognised by FIFA as the first international football match ever played, held on St Andrews Day 1972. This was the match that sparked international football.

The stadium stands on the outskirts of Greenock. Set back from the town centre, with the River Clyde flowing to the north, its distinctive single stand looms over a cinder running track surrounding a playing field.

Willie Ormond’s team stormed to victory at Hampden over the Auld Enemy in the Home International Championships in May 1976, after coming from behind to secure a win for the home crowd with goals from Don Masson and Kenny Daglish.

Scotland emerged victorious in the Home International Championship against England in 1977 with a spectacular win after Stunning strikes from Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish.

The game will always be remembered for James McFadden’s screaming 30-yarder, a goal which ranks among the sweetest of Scotland strikes.

If ever a game encapsulated all of the agonies and ecstasies of Scottish football, this was it. When the final whistle sounded on July 27 2017 at the De Adelaarshorst in Deventer, Holland, the final score read Scotland 1 Spain 0.

Two years on from their first appearance at the European Championships, Scotland’s women took their bow on football’s greatest stage – the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
